چکیده

The Internet is built around the assumption of contemporaneous end-to-end connectivity. This is at odds with what typically happens in mobile networking, where mobile devices move between islands of connectivity, having opportunity to transmit packets through their wireless interface or simply carrying the data toward a connectivity island. We propose Pocket Switched Networking, a communication paradigm which reflects the reality faced by the mobile user. Pocket Networking falls under DTN. We describe the challenges that this approach entails and provide evidence that it is feasible with today’s technology.

Optical burst and packet switching

The increasing volume and ratio of packet switched traffic poses new challenges on optical transmission technology applied in telecommunications networks. Retaining efficient operation of networks under the changing traffic load calls for development of new solutions. The paper focuses on two research directions of increasing importance: Optical Burst Switching (OBS) and Optical Packet Switchin...

Connectivity Management for Opportunistic Communications in PSN

Opportunistic communications through Pocket Switched Networks (PSN) is a communication paradigm which aims to exploit contact opportunities between mobile devices and human mobility to transfer data in a peer-to-peer fashion. Building real PSN systems is challenging: mobile devices have resource limitations, network interfaces and protocols do not readily support ad hoc communications, and fina...

Exploitation of Switched Lightpaths for e-Health: Constraints and Challenges

The Exploitation of Switched Lightpaths for e-Science Applications (ESLEA) project is evaluating the feasibility of using switched lightpath networks to support various e-Science applications. This feasibility is being investigated via case studies, one of which pertains to the use of such networks to support distributed healthcare research and delivery. We consider some of the constraints and ...

RTFM: Publish/Subscribe Internetworking Architecture

We present a packet switched inter-networking paradigm different from the existing ones in that we argue for publish/subscribe (pub/sub) based networking architecture. The key idea of the paradigm is to distribute control over data reception from network endpoints to the network itself, and combine this with the way routing and forwarding is performed. In this paper, we outline the argumentatio...

Distributed Object Programming Environment for Smart Card Application Development

Corresponding Email: [email protected] Abstract Despite the potential of smart card as a key technology to be used as a service-providing device that is truly portable and programmable, it has not received much attention, other than the handful applications that are already being successfully employed in domain-specific areas. In particular, smart card technology operating over a distr...
